City trip and wine trip to Leipzig and the surrounding area

Lots of culture and a beautiful old town with lovingly restored Renaissance and Art Nouveau buildings - Leipzig is very popular with short vacationers. The trip is also worthwhile for wine lovers. Because south of the city is a growing area that produces a very special drop.

Culture and a relaxed lifestyle - Leipzig is considered an insider tip among students and the young at heart.
Specks Hof is the oldest shopping arcade and delights visitors with its stained glass and copper ceilings.
Wine lovers should definitely visit the Saale-Unstrut wine region.
Berlin is full of tourists and in Hamburg it's raining all the time - so where do you go when you're planning a weekend trip?  leipzig germany hostel ! Far too few people have noticed how beautiful it is there. The city has retained a pleasant nonchalance, has remained manageable and, above all, affordable. The last point in particular has gotten around among young people and so the university is becoming increasingly popular. And where there are many young people, there are many pubs, bars and cafes, there are concerts, artists, crazy people and young companies. In short: this is where life takes place. City of Leipzig Leipzig is the new Berlin - at least as far as the image is concerned. In terms of numbers, it's catching up.

The Hotel Arcona Living Bach 14 is recommended for overnight stays. This is right in the center right next to the Thomaskirche. This includes the Weinwirtschaft restaurant. There are numerous wines from Meissen on the menu, so you can drink your way through the local wineries and get a first vinophile impression. But more on that later.

A stroll through Leipzig

The number 89 bus is the ideal way to get a good overview of the city, as it drives right through Leipzig. It starts at the main train station and ends in the old working-class district of Connewitz. A highlight of the city is Specks Hof. This is the oldest shopping arcade and delights visitors with its stained glass and copper ceilings. The Mädlerpassage should also be on the plan, because that's where the most well-known restaurant in Germany is located: Auerbachs Keller. Despite the large tourist rush, this is a special experience. And the food is surprisingly good. Leipzig Tourist Service Auerbachs Keller is located in the Mädler-Passage

Leipzig also has a phenomenal cultural programme. The Thomanerchor or the Gewandhausorchester play classical music at a high level, there are also various music festivals throughout the year and, since 1976, the Leipzig Jazz Days. This year the 40th anniversary will be celebrated from September 29th to October 8th.

Off to the countryside

The area around Leipzig is hardly known, but really worth seeing. Müchel is about an hour west by car or train. The village with just 9000 inhabitants is located right next to the Geiseltalsee, the largest artificial lake in Germany with almost 19 square kilometers. It was created in the former Geiseltal lignite mining area and filled with water from the Saale between 2003 and 2011. dpa/Jan Woitas The Geiseltalsee is the largest artificial lake in Germany

In the meantime, a beautiful tourist infrastructure has developed on the banks. There you will find three observation towers, a cycle and hiking trail around the lake and a small harbor from which a ship departs for tours on the lake. There is even wine growing on the banks of the Geiseltalsee, in 2000 a vineyard was planted there. In the meantime, the hobby project has become a serious business with an area of three hectares.

A very special wine journey

When it comes to wine, you should go a little further south. The Schulze winery is located there in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region. The wine region is still a very exotic venture for most wine lovers, since the weather conditions and cultivation traditions in the GDR were different from those in the West.

In 1999, winemaker Marcel Schulze decided to revive the old wine-growing tradition at the Posa monastery in Zeitz and planted the first vines. A specialty of the award-winning winemaker is the exotic variety Cabernet Blanc. The good thing about this vine is that it requires little to no sprays as it is resistant to most diseases. dpa/David Ebener The grape harvest in the Saale-Unstrut area

A special wine from East Germany

The scent of the Cabernet Blanc is unique: a little like kohlrabi, plus green peppers, apricots and yellow apples. That sounds quite strange, but it is spectacular. The wine flows very smoothly and easily on the palate, a great feeling to drink. Flavors of yellow fruit: apricot dominates, yellow apple comes along and some lemongrass.

Anyone who has had enough of all the interchangeable, fruity white wines should definitely try this wine. Serve with a quiche or vegetable risotto. And of course: Leipzig all sorts.

The Cabernet Blanc from the Schulze winery costs 6 euros and is available here directly from the winemaker on the farm.

Leipzig really is a very beautiful city. I would only save myself Connewitz, because it could be that instead of the good wine you get served a "Molotov cocktail" if you don't follow the customs of the "alternative left scenery"!

Leipzig is at least 50 km away from the wine-growing region and Geiseltal even more (see picture). Why not Halle/S. was presented here, where historic vineyards can be seen up to a maximum of 12 km directly from the city and, moreover, these do not belong to Saxony, but to SA. is a big mystery to me. What Unstrut means is also closer to Halle than to Leipzig. But what would suit Leipzig is the Elbe valley, thanks....
